Why You’ll Love This Best-Ever Hawaiian Pizza

If you’re a regular visitor to our blog, you know that pizza isn’t just a meal in our household—it’s a cherished tradition. We’ve experimented with countless combinations, crusts, and sauces, always in pursuit of that perfect slice. So, when my husband, a discerning pizza enthusiast, declared this Hawaiian Pizza to be “the best he has ever had,” I knew we had stumbled upon a true culinary gem. This wasn’t just a compliment; it was an affirmation that this recipe transcends the ordinary, offering a truly exceptional flavor profile.

The debate surrounding pineapple on pizza is as old as time, a culinary controversy that divides families and friends. However, one bite of this Hawaiian Pizza, with its harmonious blend of savory meats and succulent pineapple, is often enough to convert even the most ardent skeptics. It’s a testament to the magic that happens when contrasting flavors come together in perfect balance, creating something far greater than the sum of its parts. This pizza doesn’t just embrace the sweet and savory; it elevates it to an art form.

Be warned: this pizza has a tendency to vanish in record time! Its popularity means you might just need to double the recipe, because trust us, one simply won’t be enough. Prepare for empty plates and requests for seconds—or even thirds!

The Great Pineapple Debate: Does Pineapple Belong on Pizza?

The question of whether pineapple has a rightful place on pizza is one of the most hotly contested topics in the culinary world. For decades, it has sparked lively discussions, passionate defenses, and outright condemnations. The original creator, Sam Panopoulos, first added pineapple to pizza in Canada in 1962, seeking new and exciting flavors for his menu. Little did he know, he was igniting a global debate.

On one side are the traditionalists, who argue that fruit, especially sweet and tangy pineapple, simply doesn’t belong on a savory Italian classic. They might point to the potential for a “soggy” crust or an overpowering sweetness that detracts from the classic tomato and cheese foundation. For them, pizza is sacred, and pineapple is an unwelcome intruder.

On the other side are the adventurers, the flavor explorers who embrace the unconventional. They celebrate the bright, juicy burst of sweetness that pineapple brings, arguing that it cuts through the richness of the cheese and the saltiness of the ham and bacon, creating a delightful contrast. The sweet and savory combination is a staple in many cuisines, and for these enthusiasts, Hawaiian pizza is a prime example of its success.

This recipe stands firmly with the pineapple proponents. We believe that when prepared correctly—with ripe pineapple that’s been properly drained, combined with high-quality meats and cheeses—the fruit transforms the pizza into something uniquely delicious. It’s a bold, flavorful choice that offers a refreshing counterpoint to the more traditional ingredients, making each bite an exciting journey for your taste buds. So, if you’re on the fence, we urge you to try this recipe. You might just find yourself converted to the sweet side!

Essential Ingredients for Your Perfect Hawaiian Pizza

Crafting an unforgettable Hawaiian pizza begins with selecting the finest ingredients. Here’s a detailed look at what you’ll need and some tips for making the best choices:

  • Bacon: For that ultimate texture and flavor, we recommend a high-quality thick-cut bacon. Its robust flavor stands up well to the other toppings and crisps beautifully. If thick-cut isn’t available, regular bacon works just fine; just ensure it’s cooked to a perfect crisp. The crispy texture provides a fantastic counterpoint to the softer pineapple and ham.
  • Ham: The choice of ham can significantly impact your pizza. I prefer using actual slices of ham, perhaps from a deli or leftover from a holiday roast, cut into smaller, bite-sized pieces. This offers a more authentic meaty texture. Alternatively, pre-cubed ham is a convenient option. If you opt for thinner sliced ham, be mindful not to let it dry out during the pre-cooking stage to maintain its juiciness.
  • Pizza Dough: The foundation of any great pizza is its dough. My personal preference is my tried-and-true homemade pizza dough recipe, which offers an unparalleled texture and flavor. However, to save time without sacrificing quality, feel free to use your favorite store-bought pizza dough. Look for fresh dough in the refrigerated section of your grocery store for the best results.
  • Pizza Sauce: A truly exceptional pizza sauce is crucial for this recipe. It ties all the flavors together. While my homemade pizza sauce is a quick and flavorful option (ready in just 20 minutes!), any high-quality store-bought pizza sauce will suffice. Look for a sauce with a rich tomato flavor and a balanced seasoning profile.
  • Cheese: This Hawaiian pizza is designed to be wonderfully cheesy, calling for a generous 8 ounces of cheese. For superior melt and flavor, I highly recommend using freshly grated mozzarella cheese. Pre-shredded varieties often contain anti-caking agents that can hinder a smooth, even melt. Freshly grated cheese will create that gooey, irresistible pull we all crave.
  • Pineapple: While canned pineapple is convenient, using fresh pineapple will elevate your pizza to new heights. Fresh pineapple boasts a brighter, more intense flavor and a firmer texture. If you opt for canned pineapple, it’s essential to drain it thoroughly and pat the pieces dry with a paper towel. Excess moisture can make your pizza soggy, preventing that perfectly crisp crust.
  • Parsley & Red Pepper Flakes: These are optional additions but highly recommended for an extra pop of color, a fresh herbaceous note from the parsley, and a subtle hint of heat from the red pepper flakes. They add a sophisticated finish and enhance the overall taste experience.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Make the Best Hawaiian Pizza

Creating this irresistible Hawaiian pizza is straightforward, and with these detailed steps, you’ll be enjoying a slice of paradise in no time:

Preparing Your Flavorful Toppings

STEP 1: Crisp the Bacon. Begin by cutting your thick-cut bacon into small, even strips. Place them in a hot skillet over medium heat. Cook the bacon, stirring occasionally, until it reaches your desired level of crispness. Once perfectly crisp, use a slotted spoon to transfer the bacon pieces to a plate lined with paper towels. This will help absorb any excess grease, ensuring your bacon remains delightfully crunchy on the pizza. Drain all but about one tablespoon of the rendered bacon fat from the skillet; this flavorful grease will be used in the next step.

STEP 2: Brown the Ham. Return the skillet with the remaining bacon grease to medium heat. Add your ham pieces to the hot skillet. Cook for just a few minutes, stirring frequently, until the ham is heated through and lightly browned at the edges. This process not only warms the ham but also infuses it with that incredible smoky bacon flavor, adding another layer of depth to your pizza. Set aside with the bacon.

Assembling Your Pizza Masterpiece

STEP 3: Prepare the Dough. On a lightly floured surface or a piece of parchment paper, roll or stretch your pizza dough into a large, even circle, aiming for approximately 12 inches in diameter. If using parchment paper, you can easily transfer the dough to your pizza stone or baking sheet later.

STEP 4: Sauce the Base. Spread your chosen pizza sauce evenly over the prepared dough, leaving a small border around the edges for the crust. I typically use about 1/3 cup of sauce, but you can adjust this amount based on your personal preference for a saucier or less saucier pizza.

STEP 5: Add the Cheese. Generously sprinkle the freshly grated mozzarella cheese over the pizza sauce. Ensure even distribution to get that perfect melt in every bite.

STEP 6: Layer the Toppings. Now for the stars of the show! Distribute the cooked bacon, browned ham, and pineapple pieces evenly over the cheese layer. I like to spread them one at a time to ensure every slice gets a good mix of all the delicious components. If using, sprinkle on the optional red pepper flakes and fresh parsley for an extra flourish of flavor and color.

Baking to Perfection

STEP 7: Bake until Golden. Carefully transfer your assembled pizza to a preheated oven (ideally with a pizza stone) and bake until the crust is golden brown, crisp, and the cheese is beautifully melted and bubbling. This usually takes around 10-15 minutes, depending on your oven and crust thickness. Keep an eye on it to prevent over-browning.

STEP 8: Cool and Serve. Once baked, remove the pizza from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing. This brief resting period allows the cheese to set slightly, making for cleaner cuts and preventing toppings from sliding off. Slice into wedges and serve immediately to enjoy the ultimate homemade Hawaiian Pizza!

Expert Tips & Tricks for Your Best Hawaiian Pizza

Achieving pizza perfection is all about the details. Here are some pro tips to ensure your homemade Hawaiian Pizza is nothing short of spectacular:

Achieving a Crispy Crust

For effortless handling and a truly crispy crust, I highly recommend using parchment paper when making pizza. It makes transferring the raw pizza to the oven and the baked pizza back out incredibly easy, preventing sticking and messes. Even better, bake your pizza on a pizza stone. These are a fantastic investment—relatively inexpensive, and with proper care, they will last for years. A preheated pizza stone ensures a beautifully crisp bottom crust, mimicking professional brick ovens.

Preventing Soggy Pineapple

If you’re using canned pineapple, it’s crucial to thoroughly drain it and then pat the pieces completely dry with paper towels. Canned pineapple often comes packed in syrup or juice, and any residual moisture will release during baking, leading to a soggy pizza crust and a less appealing texture. Taking this extra step makes all the difference!

Customizing Your Toppings

While classic Hawaiian pizza features ham and bacon, feel free to experiment. You can substitute ham with Canadian bacon for a leaner option, or even add some grilled chicken for an extra protein boost. For those who like a bit more heat, a pinch more red pepper flakes or even some sliced jalapeños can add a welcome kick. A drizzle of BBQ sauce instead of traditional pizza sauce can also transform this into a BBQ Hawaiian Pizza!

Reheating Leftovers Like a Pro

Should you be lucky enough to have any leftovers, storing them in an airtight container in the refrigerator will keep them fresh for 2-3 days. Our favorite method for reheating cold pizza is in the air fryer; it achieves an unparalleled crispness in minutes. Alternatively, you can reheat slices in a hot oven (around 375°F or 190°C) on a baking sheet until warmed through and crispy, or even quickly on the stovetop in a dry skillet over medium heat for a few minutes per side.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hawaiian Pizza

Where did Hawaiian Pizza originate?

Despite its name, Hawaiian pizza did not originate in Hawaii. It was created in 1962 by Sam Panopoulos, a Greek-Canadian restaurateur in Chatham, Ontario, Canada. He added canned pineapple to pizza as an experiment, inspired by his love for sweet and savory Chinese dishes.

Can I use store-bought pizza dough?

Absolutely! While homemade dough is always wonderful, store-bought pizza dough is a fantastic time-saver and works perfectly for this recipe. Just make sure to let it come to room temperature before stretching for easier handling.

What kind of ham is best for Hawaiian Pizza?

For the best flavor and texture, we recommend using good quality cooked ham, either from a deli or leftover from a roast, cut into small cubes or pieces. Canadian bacon is also a popular and delicious alternative, offering a slightly different flavor profile and leaner meat.

How do I prevent my pizza from getting soggy?

The key to a non-soggy pizza lies in a few steps: preheating your oven and pizza stone thoroughly, and most importantly, draining and patting your pineapple very dry if using canned. This removes excess moisture that would otherwise seep into the crust during baking. Cooking your bacon and ham before adding them to the pizza also helps prevent excess fat and moisture.

Can I make this pizza ahead of time or freeze it?

You can prepare the bacon and ham ahead of time and store them in the refrigerator. As for assembling the pizza, it’s best to do it just before baking for the freshest results. Freezing leftover baked pizza slices works well; simply wrap them tightly in plastic wrap and then foil. Reheat from frozen in the oven or air fryer.
