Leading our lineup of holiday treats are none other than cake balls and their ever-popular cousin, cake pops. These delightful little spheres have taken the dessert world by storm, offering a charming, bite-sized indulgence that’s perfect for parties. Given their widespread appeal, we couldn’t resist giving them a patriotic makeover. While cake pops are often celebrated more for their adorable presentation than their complex flavor, this recipe embraces both, offering a visually stunning treat that’s also incredibly delicious. We’ve designed this recipe to be super straightforward, starting with a simple cake mix base.

Crafting the Perfect Red and Blue Velvet Cake Pops

One of the brilliant aspects of this particular recipe is its efficiency: you only need a single cake mix to create both the vibrant red velvet and the striking blue velvet cake. For the classic red hue, standard liquid red food coloring works beautifully. However, since blue liquid food coloring isn’t as readily available or as concentrated, we recommend using a high-quality blue paste food coloring to achieve that deep, rich blue tone. While the process of making cake pops involves a few steps, they are remarkably easy to execute, and the end result is a crowd-pleaser that guests of all ages will adore. The effort is minimal compared to the joyful impact these festive treats will have on your celebration.

These cake pops are more than just dessert; they are miniature works of art that capture the essence of the Fourth of July. Their striking colors make them an instant hit on any dessert table, and their individual serving size makes them hygienic and convenient for outdoor gatherings. Imagine a platter full of these vibrant red and blue delights, perhaps adorned with a touch of white sprinkles, adding a burst of color and sweetness to your patriotic spread. They are a conversation starter and a testament to the festive spirit of the holiday.

Preparing these Red and Blue Velvet Cake Pops is a delightful culinary adventure that promises a festive reward. The process starts with baking a simple white cake, which then gets divided and transformed into two distinct, vividly colored batters. This separation allows for the creation of both red and blue cake, which will later be crumbled and mixed with a luscious cream cheese frosting. The magic truly happens when these moist cake-and-frosting mixtures are rolled into perfect spheres, chilled, and then dipped in bright candy melts. The final touch of sprinkles adds that extra sparkle, making them irresistible.

Tips for Cake Pop Perfection

Achieving perfectly smooth and round cake pops requires a few simple techniques. When crumbling the cake, ensure there are no large lumps, as this will result in an uneven texture. Mixing with your hands is indeed the easiest and most effective way to combine the cake crumbs and frosting, allowing you to feel when the mixture reaches the ideal consistency—moist enough to hold its shape but not overly sticky. Chilling the cake balls before dipping is crucial; this helps them firm up, preventing them from falling apart and making the dipping process much smoother. For dipping, melt your candy melts carefully, either in a microwave or a double boiler, ensuring they are smooth and free of clumps. A small amount of coconut oil or vegetable shortening can be added to thin the melts if needed, making for an easier, more even coating.

Beyond the Fourth of July, these cake pops offer versatile appeal. Imagine adapting the colors for other holidays or themes: green and red for Christmas, pastels for Easter, or school colors for a graduation party. The “velvet” texture, achieved by adding a touch of cocoa to the cake mix, gives them a subtle depth of flavor that complements the sweet cream cheese frosting beautifully. This recipe is not just about a dessert; it’s about creating joyful memories and adding a touch of patriotic flair to your celebrations.

Everyone’s favorite cake balls – in red, white and blue to celebrate July 4th! These patriotic cake pops are easy to make and guaranteed to delight your guests with their vibrant colors and delicious taste.

Ingredients

Cake

  • 1 box white cake mix
  • 1 1/4 cups buttermilk
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa
  • 1 teaspoon blue paste food color
  • 1 tablespoon red liquid food color

Frosting & Decoration

  • 8- ounces cream cheese softened
  • 1/2 cup butter softened
  • 2-3 cups powdered sugar
  • red, white and blue candy melts
  • assorted sprinkles
  • sucker sticks if desired

Instructions

  • Prepare the Cake: Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C). Lightly grease the bottom and sides of two 8×8-inch baking dishes to prevent sticking.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the white cake mix, buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and unsweetened cocoa. Beat on low speed until all ingredients are just moistened. Increase speed to medium and continue beating for 2 minutes, ensuring to scrape down the sides of the bowl occasionally to incorporate all ingredients evenly.
  • Divide the prepared cake batter evenly into two separate bowls. To one bowl, add the blue paste food coloring and mix until the color is consistent and vibrant. To the second bowl, add the red liquid food coloring and mix until a rich red hue is achieved. Pour the blue cake batter into one of the prepared 8×8-inch dishes, and the red cake batter into the other. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of each cake comes out clean.
  • Once baked, carefully remove the cakes from the oven and allow them to cool completely on a wire rack. Cooling is essential before proceeding to ensure the cake balls hold their shape.
  • Make the Frosting: In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, combine the softened cream cheese and softened butter. Cream them together on medium speed until the mixture is smooth and light. Gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, beating until the frosting reaches your desired sweetness and consistency.
  • Assemble the Cake Balls: Once the cakes are completely cool, crumble the blue velvet cake into one large bowl and the red velvet cake into another large bowl. Divide the prepared cream cheese frosting evenly between the two bowls. Mix the cake crumbs and frosting thoroughly in each bowl. We find that using your hands is the easiest and most effective way to combine these ingredients until a uniform, pliable dough forms. Roll the cake mixture into small, bite-sized balls (approximately 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter). Place the formed cake balls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and refrigerate them for at least 30 minutes, or until they are firm. This chilling step is crucial for easy dipping.
  • Decorate the Cake Pops: Melt your red, white, and blue candy melts according to package directions. You can use a microwave safe bowl or a double boiler for this. If using sucker sticks, dip the tip of each stick into the melted candy melt first, then insert it into a cake ball to secure it. Dip each chilled cake ball (or cake pop) completely into the melted candy melts, allowing any excess to drip off gently. Immediately after dipping, sprinkle with assorted patriotic sprinkles, if desired, before the candy coating sets. Place the finished cake pops on a parchment-lined baking sheet or in a stand to allow the coating to fully harden. Enjoy your festive Red and Blue Velvet Cake Pops!
