The Ultimate Grab-and-Go Breakfast: Savory Cheddar Sausage Biscuits
Mornings can often feel like a frantic race against the clock, especially when you have a household full of early birds… and one little sleeper. I vividly remember the decision point when registering my daughter for kindergarten: morning or afternoon classes? I confidently chose morning, envisioning serene afternoons for activities and adventures. After all, my boys were always up with the sun, so surely she would follow suit.
Oh, how naive I was! School began, and with it, a new reality dawned. My daughter, for the first time in her young life, discovered the joy of sleeping in. Suddenly, my mornings transformed from a calm routine to a full-blown sprint. While the boys cheerfully bounced out of bed, I found myself gently—or sometimes not so gently—waking her up, often an hour after her brothers had already started their day.
The morning chorus became a series of urgent reminders: “Eat your breakfast! Wash your face! Brush your teeth! Did you make your bed?” Then the inevitable panic would set in: “The bus is coming in five minutes, and we can’t find your shoes! Is your homework in your backpack? Boys, hurry up and get your shoes on if you want to wave goodbye at the bus stop!”
And just like that, we’d all spill out the door, a whirlwind of half-eaten toast and misplaced socks, with me often still in my pajamas, marveling at how challenging it could be to simply make it to the bus stop by 8:45 AM. Despite the morning chaos, I stand by my choice of morning kindergarten. Those open afternoons, even if they occasionally involve catching up on chores, are truly a gift for spontaneous adventures!
Simplifying Mornings with Delicious, Hearty Breakfasts
This daily morning rush has fueled my relentless quest for easy, delicious, and, most importantly, quick breakfast solutions. I need recipes that don’t demand hours in the kitchen, or better yet, can be prepared in advance and enjoyed on the fly. Enter these incredible Cheddar Sausage Biscuits – the epitome of a perfect on-the-go breakfast that solves many of my morning dilemmas.

Why These Savory Biscuits Are a Game Changer
These aren’t your average, plain biscuits. While they maintain the desirable qualities of a classic biscuit—buttery, flaky, and wonderfully light—they are elevated with generous amounts of sharp cheddar cheese and chunks of savory Jones Dairy Farm Maple Sausage Links. This thoughtful combination means that all the essential elements of a satisfying breakfast are consolidated into one convenient, flavorful biscuit. No need for separate plates, forks, or a leisurely sit-down meal; these biscuits deliver a complete breakfast experience in a portable package.
One of the biggest advantages of this Cheddar Sausage Biscuit recipe is its make-ahead potential. You can easily whip up a batch the night before, and then simply warm them up in the morning for a quick and hearty breakfast. This prep-ahead convenience is a lifesaver for busy weekdays. Plus, knowing they’re made with Jones Dairy Farm Sausage Links gives me peace of mind. Their commitment to all-natural products means their sausages are free from MSG, nitrates, and preservatives. And for those with dietary considerations, their sausages are certified gluten-free (though this biscuit recipe itself is not, the sausage and cheese would be fantastic in a gluten-free biscuit adaptation!).
I designed these biscuits to be “monster-sized” because I wanted them to be a complete meal on their own. For adults, one large biscuit is perfectly filling. However, for smaller appetites, especially kids, half of one is often just right. Feel free to adjust the size according to your family’s needs. If you prefer to serve them alongside other breakfast items rather than as the main event, cutting them into smaller portions makes them a wonderful complement to eggs or fruit.

Tips for Perfect Cheddar Sausage Biscuits Every Time
Achieving the perfect biscuit texture — light, fluffy, and tender — requires a few key techniques. Here are some tips to ensure your Cheddar Sausage Biscuits turn out beautifully:
- Keep Ingredients Cold: Cold butter is crucial for flaky biscuits. Use butter straight from the fridge and work quickly. The small pockets of butter create steam during baking, leading to those desirable flaky layers. You can even cube your butter and then freeze it for 10-15 minutes before mixing.
- Don’t Overwork the Dough: Over-kneading develops the gluten in the flour too much, resulting in tough biscuits. Mix just until the ingredients are combined and the dough barely comes together. It’s okay if it looks a little shaggy.
- Gentle Handling: When patting out and cutting the dough, be gentle. Avoid twisting the biscuit cutter, as this can seal the edges and prevent the biscuits from rising properly. Press straight down and lift.
- Uniform Thickness: Ensure your dough is of uniform thickness before cutting. This helps all biscuits bake evenly.
- Preheat Oven Properly: Biscuits bake best in a hot oven. Make sure your oven is fully preheated to 425°F before you put the biscuits in. The initial burst of heat helps them rise quickly and achieve a golden-brown exterior.
- Brush with Melted Butter: Brushing the baked biscuits with a little melted butter right after they come out of the oven adds a beautiful sheen, enhances flavor, and keeps them soft.
Serving Suggestions and Variations
These Cheddar Sausage Biscuits are incredibly versatile! Here are some ideas to make them your own:
- Pairings: While they are a meal on their own, they also pair wonderfully with fresh fruit salad, a side of scrambled eggs (if you have extra time!), or even a dollop of apple butter for a sweet and savory contrast.
- Cheese Options: Don’t limit yourself to sharp cheddar. Try mild cheddar, Colby Jack, pepper jack for a spicy kick, or even a blend of your favorite cheeses.
- Sausage Alternatives: While Jones Dairy Farm Maple Sausage Links are fantastic, you can experiment with their other varieties, like classic pork sausage or even turkey sausage for a leaner option. Just ensure it’s cooked and chopped before adding to the dough. You could also use crumbled breakfast sausage.
- Add Herbs or Spices: A pinch of dried chives, a sprinkle of garlic powder, or a dash of black pepper can add extra depth to the biscuit flavor.
- Make Them Spicy: Incorporate some finely diced jalapeños (remove seeds for less heat) or a pinch of cayenne pepper into the dough along with the cheese and sausage for a spicy breakfast biscuit.
Make-Ahead and Storage Instructions
These biscuits are ideal for meal prepping:
- To Make Ahead: Prepare the dough as directed, cut into biscuits, and place them on a baking sheet. You can then cover them with plastic wrap and refrigerate for up to 24 hours before baking. Add a few extra minutes to the baking time if baking from cold.
- Freezing Unbaked Biscuits: Arrange the cut biscuits on a parchment-lined baking sheet and freeze until solid (about 1-2 hours). Once frozen, transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or airtight container. They can be stored in the freezer for up to 1 month. When ready to bake, place them frozen on a baking sheet and bake at 425°F, adding an extra 5-10 minutes to the baking time until golden brown.
- Freezing Baked Biscuits: Once baked and cooled completely, store the biscuits in a freezer-safe bag or airtight container for up to 1 month. Reheat in a microwave, oven (at 350°F for 10-15 minutes), or toaster oven until warmed through.
- Storing Leftovers: Baked biscuits can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for 1-2 days or in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.

Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1/3 cup cold butter
- 4 oz shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 5 Jones Dairy Farm Maple Sausage Links (1/2 of a 7 oz package), cooked and chopped
- 1 cup milk
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Add the cold butter and cut it in with a fork or pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse meal with pea-sized crumbs. Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese and the chopped cooked sausage. Pour in the milk and stir gently with a spoon or your hands, just until the dough comes together and pulls away from the sides of the bowl. Be careful not to overmix.
- Lightly flour a clean work surface. Turn the biscuit dough out onto the floured surface. Knead the dough gently a few times, just enough to bring it completely together (it will be slightly sticky). Pat the dough into a rectangle approximately 10½x7 inches. Using a sharp knife or biscuit cutter, cut the dough into 6 equal squares. Carefully transfer the biscuits to an ungreased baking sheet.
- Bake for 13 to 15 minutes, or until the tops are lightly golden brown and the biscuits are puffed and cooked through. Once removed from the oven, brush the tops of the hot biscuits with the 2 tablespoons of melted butter. Serve warm and enjoy!
