Embracing the Holiday Spirit: Simplifying Christmas

This year, my approach to the Christmas season has shifted significantly. It’s not that I don’t typically revel in the festive atmosphere; in fact, I adore it. However, as many parents can attest, the holiday period often becomes a whirlwind of responsibilities and expectations. There’s an unspoken pressure to create a “perfect” Christmas, manage school activities, handle work deadlines, and maintain the usual routines of daily life. This often leads to feeling overwhelmed, stressed, and sometimes, paradoxically, less engaged in the very joy we strive to create. I’ve found myself in cycles where the sheer volume of “to-dos” causes me to freeze, ultimately missing out on simple, meaningful moments.

So, my resolve for this Christmas is clear: simplify. This isn’t about doing less, but about doing what truly matters with intention and joy. It’s about peeling back the layers of societal expectations and reconnecting with the core traditions that bring genuine happiness and foster lasting memories. Simplifying, for me, means returning to the basics, revisiting the activities I cherished as a child, and embracing new, equally simple traditions that resonate with my family now. It’s about curating our holiday experience, choosing our favorite moments, and letting go of the stress that often accompanies trying to achieve everything on a never-ending holiday checklist.

I often recall a particular childhood tradition that perfectly encapsulates this idea of simple joy. Every Christmas Eve, my entire family would pile into the van, driving through various neighborhoods, specifically to admire the dazzling array of Christmas lights. It was such an unpretentious ritual – my mom wouldn’t even cook that night! This was the one night of the year when I distinctly remember being allowed to pick out something to eat from the gas station, enjoying it in the car. We’d listen to festive Christmas music, our faces pressed against the windows, simply marveling at the glowing lights. There was no pressure, no elaborate planning, just pure, unadulterated family time and wonder. These are the kinds of memories I want to recreate and nurture for my own children.

With this newfound focus on simplification, my family and I recently sat down to identify a few “must-do” events that truly bring us joy. One activity that topped my personal list was simply spending more time together, curled up on the couch, watching classic Christmas movies. Nothing elaborate, no fancy outings, just us, in our pajamas, immersed in the heartwarming stories that define the season. To me, these quiet, shared moments are the essence of a perfect Christmas, creating a serene and joyful atmosphere that often gets lost in the holiday rush.

This Sweet and Salty Christmas Mix is the perfect snack to have around during the holiday season! With Rice Krispies treats, chocolate candies, pretzels, peanuts and white chocolate, it’s perfect for parties, watching holiday movies, or for snacking on while searching for the best holiday light displays.

Ingredients

  • 8 Rice Krispies Treats bars (0.78 oz each, unwrapped)
  • 1 1/2 cups lightly crushed pretzels
  • 3/4 cup holiday candy coated chocolates
  • 1/2 cup salted peanuts
  • 8 oz vanilla candy coating
  • holiday sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Cut each of the Rice Krispies Treats bars in half lengthwise, and then into fourths, making 8 cubes.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the Rice Krispies Treats pieces, the pretzels, 3/4 of the candy coated chocolates, and the peanuts. Stir gently to combine all the delicious elements.
  3. Melt the vanilla candy coating according to the package directions. Be sure to melt it slowly and stir often for a smooth, pourable consistency. Pour the melted coating evenly over the mix and stir well to ensure every piece is thoroughly coated.
  4. Quickly pour the coated mix out onto a piece of waxed paper or parchment paper, spreading it into a single layer. Immediately sprinkle the reserved candy coated chocolates over the top, then generously add your holiday sprinkles for a festive touch. Allow the mix to cool completely and harden, which may take 30-60 minutes at room temperature or faster in the refrigerator. Once firm, break the mix into bite-sized pieces and serve.
