Spiced Ghost Pancakes: Your Ultimate Halloween Breakfast Treat

My adoration for Halloween runs deep, stemming from cherished childhood memories. I recall my brother’s enthusiastic ventures into creating haunted houses in our grandparents’ basement every Sunday night in October. While looking back now brings a chuckle, those dimly lit corridors and homemade masks were genuinely thrilling and, at the time, quite terrifying! It was through these joyful scares and the shared excitement of the holiday that my lasting affection for Halloween blossomed.

Beyond the spooky theatrics, I’ve always cherished Halloween night for its vibrant decorations, the neighborhood camaraderie during trick-or-treating, and, undeniably, the glorious bounty of candy! It’s a time when imagination takes flight, and a festive atmosphere permeates everything. This spirit extends beyond just the evening’s festivities; it’s about making the entire day a celebration.

While our Halloween night typically culminates in a comforting pot of chili, bubbling away in the crock pot, waiting to warm us after our trick-or-treating adventures, I believe the day deserves a equally spirited start. And what better way to kick off the spookiest day of the year than with a stack of festive pancakes?

Enter these incredible Spiced Ghost Pancakes – a recipe that combines ease, comfort, and undeniable holiday charm. These aren’t just any pancakes; they’re infused with the warm, aromatic spices that are the very essence of autumn. Think cozy notes of cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, and ginger, all mingling to create a flavor profile that’s both inviting and perfectly suited for a crisp October morning.

The beauty of this recipe lies in its simplicity. Starting with a convenient pancake mix means these delightful treats come together with remarkable speed and minimal effort, making them ideal for a busy holiday morning. You’ll be whisking up a flavorful batter in no time, ready to transform it into fluffy, golden pancakes.

Why Spiced Ghost Pancakes are a Must-Try This Halloween

These pancakes offer more than just a delicious taste; they provide a complete sensory experience that perfectly captures the Halloween spirit. From the aromatic spices filling your kitchen to the playful ghosts adorning each stack, every element is designed to delight.

The Magic of Autumn Spices in Every Bite

The blend of spices – cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and ginger – is what elevates these from ordinary pancakes to an extraordinary fall delight. This aromatic quartet works in harmony to create a warm, inviting flavor that evokes cozy autumn evenings and pumpkin patches. Each bite delivers a comforting burst of seasonal taste, making them irresistible not just for Halloween, but throughout the entire fall season. The spices also add a beautiful, subtle warmth that perfectly complements the rich pancake base.

Effortless Preparation with Pantry Staples

One of the biggest advantages of this recipe is its incredible ease. By building on a foundation of pancake mix (like Bisquick), you significantly cut down on prep time without sacrificing flavor or texture. This makes them an accessible option for even novice cooks, or for those hectic Halloween mornings when you want something special without a lengthy cooking process. Simply combine the mix with the liquid ingredients and our signature spice blend, and you’re halfway to a truly memorable breakfast.

Crafting Adorable Whipped Cream Ghosts

The “ghost” element, created from freshly whipped cream, is not a new concept to our kitchen (you might remember them from our Pumpkin Cheesecake Bars!), but it remains an absolute favorite. These ethereal toppers are not only incredibly delicious and light against the spiced pancakes, but they are also incredibly fun to make and watch come to life. Kids (and adults!) will be utterly charmed by these whimsical figures. With just a pastry bag and a couple of mini chocolate chips for eyes, you can transform simple whipped cream into an instantly recognizable and utterly adorable ghost, adding that perfect touch of spooky charm to your breakfast plate.

Essential Tips and Tricks for Perfect Halloween Pancakes

To ensure your Spiced Ghost Pancakes are nothing short of spectacular, consider these helpful tips and tricks:

  • From Scratch Option: If you prefer to make your pancakes entirely from scratch, or if you don’t have pancake mix on hand, feel free to use your favorite homemade pancake recipe. Simply prepare the batter as usual, then incorporate the specified autumn spices into the dry ingredients for that signature fall flavor. (For a trusted base, this is my favorite Pancake Recipe).
  • Year-Round Enjoyment: While the whipped cream ghosts undeniably make these pancakes perfect for Halloween, the spiced pancakes themselves are a delightful treat that can be enjoyed throughout the entire fall season. Feel free to omit the ghost decoration for an everyday autumnal breakfast.
  • Simplify Your Spices: For an even quicker preparation, you can substitute the individual cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and ginger with 1 teaspoon of pre-mixed Pumpkin Pie Spice. This provides a similar warm, seasonal flavor profile with less measuring.
  • Piping Bag Alternative: Don’t have a pastry bag for the whipped cream ghosts? No problem! A sturdy zip-top bag with one corner snipped off works just as well for piping the ghostly shapes. For a truly rustic look, you can even spoon the whipped cream onto the pancakes and use a knife or the back of a spoon to gently shape it.
  • Serving Suggestions: These spiced pancakes are fantastic on their own, but they also pair wonderfully with a variety of toppings beyond the ghosts. Consider a drizzle of warm maple syrup, a sprinkle of chopped pecans, a dollop of apple butter, or even fresh apple slices for an extra autumnal touch.
  • Keeping Pancakes Warm: If you’re cooking for a crowd, keep your finished pancakes warm by placing them on a baking sheet in a single layer in a preheated oven set to a low temperature (around 200°F / 95°C).

Start Halloween morning off with a spooky pancake breakfast with these Spiced Ghost Pancakes. These are easy, fall flavored pancakes topped with a whipped cream ghost.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Original Bisquick® mix
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
  • Pinch of ginger
  • 2 eggs lightly beaten
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3/4 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • Mini chocolate chips
  • Maple syrup for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the Bisquick, sugar, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and ginger. Stir in the eggs and milk until just combined. Be careful not to overmix the batter; a few lumps are fine.
  3. For each pancake, pour approximately 1/4 cup of the batter onto the hot griddle. Cook until bubbles begin to form on top and the edges appear set. Carefully flip the pancake and cook on the second side until golden brown and cooked through. Repeat with remaining batter.
  4. To make the whipped cream ghosts, pour the heavy cream into a chilled bowl. Whip the cream using an electric mixer until it thickens and soft peaks form. Slowly add in the powdered sugar while continuing to beat until you achieve stiff peaks. Transfer the whipped cream to a pastry bag fitted with a round tip (or a zip-top bag with a corner snipped off). Pipe ghostly shapes on top of individual pancake stacks and adhere 2 mini chocolate chips for the eyes of each ghost.

Recipe Notes:

*Substitute 1 teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice for the individual spices (cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, ginger) if desired.

*These spiced pancakes are equally delicious without the ghost decorations, making them a wonderful breakfast option any day of the fall season.
