- In a medium-sized bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, 3/4 cup of the sugar, 1 1/2 teaspoons of the cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk these dry ingredients together thoroughly. Then, stir in the buttermilk, vibrant red food coloring, and vanilla extract until a smooth, well-combined red velvet batter forms. Carefully spoon this luscious batter over the melted butter in the baking dish, gently spreading it into a single, even layer.
